PRAISE AND POWER                                GREATER WORKS                                  August 31, 2021

“Verily, verily, I [Jesus Christ] say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” (John 14:12) This is an amazing statement from God’s Word. When one thinks of the many works Jesus Christ did; like raising the dead, healing the blind, the lame, casting out devil spirits and the rest, it is amazing. But what is more astounding is that it says “greater works.” How could a person even imagine that! But since God’s Word says it, that settles it.. It has to be available. These words Jesus Christ spoke.

The two verses before this provide more insight. “Believest thou not that I [Jesus Christ] am in the Father [God], and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.” (John 14:10, 11) Jesus Christ only spoke what God wanted him to speak. That is true here! Since God was in him, God could work with Jesus Christ to say the right words and perform the works. Christian believers can do greater works because Jesus Christ went unto the Father, God.

God revealed the mystery (which includes another great truth) to the apostle Paul which he recorded in Colossians. “To whom [Paul] God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” (Colossians 1:27) God is in Christ and Christ is in those who are believers. This helps us to understand that Christian believers can do the works that Jesus Christ did. Also knowing that Jesus Christ ascended unto God, the Father; those greater works can be done. It is God in Christ in you! Since the Day of Pentecost believers can lead others into the new birth and the operation of the manifestations of the spirit.

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments [basic principles] of the world, and not after Christ.” (Colossians 2:8) Philosophy and tradition may convey other thoughts than these; but believers are to conduct themselves according to what Christ accomplished. Jesus Christ went unto the Father and now it is Christ in you. Philosophy, traditional thinking and basic worldliness will tell you, that you cannot live like Christ. But what did Jesus Christ say? What did God say in His Word? What wonderful grace and mercy from God!

“For in him [in Christ] dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead [Head God] bodily. And ye are complete [completely, completely, absolutely complete] in him, which is the head of all principality  and power: …” (Colossians 2:9, 10) The Aramaic extra extensive form which is used here for the word “complete” means “completely, completely, absolutely complete” in him. Those who have Christ within have the power from God to do the works and greater works mentioned above.

Another verse along these lines is Ephesians 3:20: “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, …” What God is able to do He is also willing to do. The power that works in us as Christian believers is God, in “Christ in you the hope of glory.” This power is evidenced as we manifest the gift of holy spirit. Then it is so wonderful that God’s Word says: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” (John 14:12) As Christian believers, it is available. Let’s believe and do those works and greater works.
